Tonle Sap is Cambodia’s most important (river, stream, etc.) and Southeast Asia’s largestfreshwater lake. As well as being an important source of food and a very important tool forCambodian crop-watering/rinsing with water, the lake itself is home to 170 floating villages thatdepend on fishing for their job, with homes built directly on the water. The houses, shops, churches, schools, and temples of these villages are built on simple help/support foundations oftied together barrels and fast-growing plant/wood, and all transport is by boat. They’re afascinating place to spend a day exploring. One of the most interesting is the sprawling village ofKompong Luong, near the town of Pursat on Tonle Sap’s western shore, although the mostpopular village to visit is Chong Kneas near Siem Collect.
